A Revolutionary Feature
While developing any mobile application, most of the times we focus on User Interface and overall User Experience which address the visible pain points of the users. While doing so, we tend to reduce the number of steps or clicks that will help the user to navigate and lead towards his end goal. But while focusing on these visible parameters, we tend to miss the hidden motivational factors of this user.
I was developing an App based product for the sales team of an FMCG company. After conducting thorough market research and interviews with the end users, we designed mobile screens with the optimum user experience. But my competitors were also following the same process. Their colors and layout might look different but eventually everyone was focusing on the UI and UX. I understand that it's essential to keep the UI and UX simple, but that should not be our final goal. Is my interface making my end user to think about something (the questions that the company wants him to think)?
Although our app looked beautiful and it was easy to use, I was not 100% satisfied and then I started going out with the sales officers in the market again, visiting local shops and distributors for few weeks. And then I started discovering multiple drawbacks in the way the sales officers were talking to the shop owners while placing an order. The sales officer generally visits 35 to 40 shops in a single day and works for 26 days in a month. When he visits a shop, he asks the shop keeper what he wants, and tries to push his products based on the current running schemes offered by the company. Also, it's very difficult for anyone to remember purchase history of more than 400 shops that he visits every month. Hence the sales officer places an order from the shop owner without knowing the actual purchase history of that respective shop.
To tackle with this problem, we developed this feature in which the application itself adds product into the cart based on the purchase history of the selected shop. The sales officer can now leverage the past data and closes more productive calls everyday, which has resulted in more revenue for the company.
